Old age is something that seems to scare many of us. We worry about how we shall deal with it, will we be healthy and active, if we are unwell who will take care of us, how we will spend our time, and many other concerns. It is easy to say that we should cross a bridge only when we come to it, but the truth remains that when we are old we need to take greater care of ourselves, and this can only be done individually.
There are a few aspects of our health which are important and which need to be emphasised. Here are just a few of them:
EXERCISE:
Yes, we agree that your body is more tired now, and your bones and muscles are beginning to creak and wobble, but exercise is still very important. The intensity may be decreased and the type of exercise may change, but it is imperative that we continue doing them. Even a daily walk may suffice in some cases, but the continuity should be maintained.
WATER:
Drink enough fluids, maybe even more than you did before. Your kidneys and the rest of your digestive system need to be kept hydrated and smooth. Water or liquids of any type are not just important, they are essential for your well-being, and as you get older your systems need greater lubrication. However, alcohol consumption must be decreased since the body no longer has the capacity to absorb the alcohol when we are older.
BALANCED DIET:
The body now has even greater need for all the nutrients and these can best be accessed by eating a balanced diet. Fried foods should be avoided at all costs, since they take longer to get digested. Fresh vegetables, fibre in all forms and less consumption of sugar, these are but a few of the common sense rules which should be followed.
VITAMIN AND SUPPLEMENT TABLETS:
Ask your doctor as to which supplement tablets suit you the most. They are really needed now, to build up your immunity and specially to cover the scarcity that may occur due to a lack of a balanced diet. Many of us develop ailments as we grow older, such as osteoporosis, diabetes, high blood pressure, prostrate problems, and urinary track problems. All these will need supplements and vitamins in order to keep them under control.
KEEP DEPRESSION AWAY:
This is the hardest solution of the all. When we need our family the most, they move away from us to lead their own lives. When we need good health the most, we are tired and our body is complaining. It is not easy to remain happy at this time, but itĀ isĀ imperative that we do not let depression take control of our minds.
REMAIN ACTIVE:
Find activities which will keep you involved and keep your brain active. It could involve going out and playing golf, or it may involve being busy on the computer. An active mind is the best way to remain healthy and happy.
